At KidsHeart Medical Center, we use trusted diagnostic tools to ensure your child’s heart is healthy and functioning as it should.
An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is one of the most commonly performed tests in pediatric cardiology.

It records the heart’s electrical activity to help us detect irregularities in rhythm or structure — quickly and without discomfort.
This simple, non-invasive test along with other Pediatric Cardiology Services are available at all our locations in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain.

What is an ECG?

An ECG measures and records the electrical signals that travel through the heart with each beat.

These signals control the rhythm and coordination of the heartbeat. By recording them, we can assess how the heart is working — even before physical symptoms appear.

The test takes just a few minutes and provides valuable information for diagnosing a wide range of cardiac conditions.

When is an ECG Recommended?

Your child’s doctor may recommend an ECG if they experience any of the following:

  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • Fainting or dizziness
  • Chest pain or palpitations
  • Shortness of breath with activity
  • Fatigue or reduced exercise tolerance
  • Family history of heart rhythm conditions
  • Pre-operative heart evaluation
  • Routine screening for children with known heart conditions

Even if your child is not showing symptoms, ECGs may be used for reassurance — especially before sports participation or surgical procedures or if there is a family history of rhythm irregularities.

What to Expect During the Test

  • Your child will lie on a bed while a technician places small, sticky electrodes on the chest, arms, and legs.
  • These electrodes are connected to the ECG machine, which records the heart’s electrical activity.
  • The test is completely painless and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.
  • No needles or radiation are involved.

Children may be asked to relax, lie still, and breathe normally during the test. In some cases, we may perform additional maneuvers (like holding breath or standing) to get more information.

What Can an ECG Detect?

An ECG helps identify:

  • Heart rhythm abnormalities (tachycardia, bradycardia, arrhythmias)
  • Conduction problems (issues with how electrical signals travels through the heart)
  • Signs of enlarged heart chambers
  • Past or silent episodes of heart strain
  • Inherited heart rhythm disorders (e.g., Long QT Syndrome)
  • Pre-operative heart status before anesthesia

Although the ECG doesn’t provide structural images, it is an essential tool for initial cardiac screening and follow-up evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes. It is completely safe, painless, and non-invasive. The test uses no radiation or electrical exposure to the child.

No preparation is needed. Your child should wear comfortable clothing and may be asked to remove a shirt for chest electrode placement.

Initial results are available immediately. A full interpretation by our Pediatric Cardiologist is typically shared the same day or during your consultation.

Further tests may be recommended, such as an echocardiogram, Holter monitor, or referral to a specialist for additional evaluation.

In some cases, anxiety or movement may impact the reading. Our team ensures a calm environment and may repeat the test if needed for accuracy.
