Stress Testing for Children

A Safe Treadmill Test to Assess How the Heart Performs During Activity

At KidsHeart Medical Center, we understand that some heart conditions only reveal themselves during physical activity.
That’s why we offer Stress Testing — a controlled, monitored treadmill test that allows our specialists to evaluate how your child’s heart responds to exercise.

This test is commonly used to detect exercise-related symptoms, assess heart rhythm, and measure overall heart function under stress.
We offer Pediatric Cardiology Services across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain.

What is a Pediatric Stress Test?

A Stress Test (also called an exercise ECG or treadmill test) evaluates the electrical activity of the heart while the child walks or runs on a treadmill under medical supervision.

It helps us identify:

  • Changes in heart rhythm or rate during exercise
  • Decrease in the heart muscle blood supply
  • Unusual blood pressure responses
  • Symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness under physical stress
  • Recovery ability after exercise
  • The effectiveness of previous cardiac treatments or surgeries
  • Presence of Exercise induced asthma

It is completely non-invasive and adapted to your child’s age and fitness level.

When is a Stress Test Recommended?

Your child’s doctor may recommend a stress test if:

  • Your child experiences chest pain or fainting during exercise
  • There is suspicion of exercise-induced arrhythmia
  • Your child is being monitored for a known heart condition
  • Fitness clearance is required for sports participation or school activities
  • Post-surgery or post-treatment evaluation is needed
  • Assessment of blood pressure response to exercise is necessary

This test provides important information that is not always visible in resting heart evaluations like ECG or echocardiogram.

What to Expect During the Test

  • Your child will be fitted with ECG electrodes and a blood pressure cuff.
  • The treadmill will start at a slow pace and gradually increase in speed and incline.
  • The entire time, our staff closely monitors heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, and breathing.
  • The test usually lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on how long the child is able to exercise.
  • After the test, a brief recovery period allows us to assess how quickly the heart returns to normal.

The test is supervised by a trained Pediatric Cardiologist and is stopped immediately if the child experiences any discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes. It’s conducted under constant medical supervision and stopped immediately if there are any concerning symptoms.

The test is not painful. Some children may feel tired, out of breath, or mildly dizzy during or after the test, which is normal and closely monitored.

Comfortable clothes and sports shoes are recommended. Your child should avoid eating a heavy meal right before the test.

Stress tests are most helpful for detecting exercise-related heart issues. Additional tests like echocardiograms or MRIs may be used alongside for a full evaluation.

Our Pediatric Cardiologist will analyze the test and discuss the results during your follow-up appointment, often within a day or two.
