Syncope (Fainting Episodes) in Children
Syncope (Fainting Episodes) in Children – Evaluation and Care
Understanding Dizziness and Fainting to Protect Your Child’s Health
At KidsHeart Medical Center, we take fainting episodes (syncope) in children seriously. While fainting is often harmless, it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying heart rhythm problem that needs prompt evaluation.
We integrate our evaluations closely with our Pediatric Cardiology Services, ensuring every case is handled thoroughly and sensitively.
What is Syncope?
Syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a sudden drop in blood flow to the brain.
It often occurs suddenly, lats for few moments, and is usually followed by a rapid recovery. In some cases there can be some warning signs as dizziness, abdominal cramp, black vision.
Common benign causes in children include:
- Vasovagal syncope (simple fainting triggered by stress, pain, or standing too long)
- Dehydration or low blood pressure
- Rapid changes in posture (orthostatic hypotension)
- Overexertion during exercise
However, in some cases, syncope can be linked to heart rhythm disorders, structural heart abnormalities, or other serious conditions — which is why proper evaluation is essential.
When to Be Concerned About Fainting
A full cardiac evaluation is recommended if fainting:
- Occurs during exercise or physical activity
- Happens while sitting or lying down (not just after standing)
- Is associated with chest pain, palpitations, or shortness of breath
- Occurs repeatedly without a clear trigger
- Is linked to a family history of sudden cardiac death or arrhythmias
Children with these signs should be seen promptly by a Pediatric Cardiologist for assessment.
How We Evaluate Fainting Episodes
At KidsHeart, our syncope evaluation typically includes:
- Detailed history-taking to understand the fainting event, triggers, and recovery
- Physical examination focusing on heart, blood pressure, and neurological signs
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check for rhythm abnormalities
- Echocardiogram to visualize heart structure if needed
- Holter monitoring or longer-term cardiac monitoring to capture arrhythmias
- Tilt table testing in selected cases to assess blood pressure and heart rate responses
We provide a comprehensive, step-by-step assessment tailored to your child’s symptoms and history.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes, especially around adolescence. Most fainting episodes are benign but should still be evaluated if there are concerning features.
Fainting during exercise, or without warning, or associated with palpitations raises concern for a possible cardiac cause.
Until evaluated and cleared, it is generally advised to limit strenuous activity after a fainting episode.
If no cardiac cause is found, lifestyle changes like staying hydrated, improving salt intake, and avoiding prolonged standing may help prevent future episodes.
