What is a 2D Echo (TTE)?
A 2D Trans-thoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) is an ultrasound scan performed from outside the chest. It uses sound waves to create images of your heart in motion, allowing cardiologists to assess:
Heart chamber size and thickness
Pumping strength (ejection fraction)
Valve structure and function
Blood flow direction and pressure
Presence of fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion)
Congenital or acquired structural abnormalities
It’s safe, quick, and often the first test ordered when evaluating heart symptoms.
When is a 2D Echo Recommended?
A 2D TTE may be recommended if you:
Experience chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, or fainting
Have a history of high blood pressure or heart murmur
Are being monitored for valve disease, heart failure, or cardiomyopathy
Require pre-surgical cardiac clearance
Are under follow-up after heart surgery or a cardiac event
It is also used to monitor the effectiveness of ongoing treatments or heart medications.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The 2D echo is:
Completely non-invasive: No needles or sedation
Painless and safe: Uses ultrasound, not radiation
Quick: Usually takes 20–30 minutes
Performed while lying down: A technician will apply gel to your chest and move a handheld probe (transducer) across your skin to capture heart images
