Stress Testing (Treadmill / Pharmacological) for Adults

Assessing How Your Heart Performs Under Physical Exertion or Controlled Medication
Stress Testing Adult Cardiology Dubai Al Ain Abu Dhabi

At KidsHeart Medical Center, we use Stress Testing to assess how your heart functions when it’s working harder, either through physical activity or medication.
This test helps detect hidden heart problems that may not be visible when your body is at rest.

We offer both Treadmill Stress Tests and Pharmacological Stress Tests across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain, providing accurate, efficient, and safe cardiac assessments.
Stress testing is a key part of our Adult Cardiology Services and is used for both diagnosis and long-term monitoring.

What is a Stress Test?

A Stress Test evaluates how your heart responds when it’s under stress — either from exercise or from medication that mimics exercise.

It helps detect:

  • Coronary artery disease (blockages or narrowed vessels)
  • Irregular heart rhythms that appear during activity
  • Poor blood flow to the heart (ischemia)
  • Changes in blood pressure and heart rate response
  • Exercise tolerance and fitness levels before surgery or rehabilitation

The test can be done even if you’re unable to walk or run, using medication to simulate the effects of physical exertion.

Who Needs a Stress Test?

A stress test may be recommended if you:

  • Experience chest pain or shortness of breath during activity
  • Have risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol
  • Have had previous heart procedures or a heart attack
  • Need clearance before surgery or returning to exercise
  • Are undergoing evaluation for an irregular heartbeat or palpitations

It’s also a helpful tool for monitoring treatment progress in patients with known heart conditions.

What Are the Types of Stress Tests?

We offer two types of stress testing based on your physical condition:

Treadmill Stress Test
  • You walk on a treadmill with gradually increasing speed and incline
  • Your ECG, heart rate, and blood pressure are continuously monitored
  • The test is stopped if symptoms develop or target heart rate is achieved
Pharmacological Stress Test
  • Medication is used to simulate the effects of exercise on the heart
  • Ideal for patients unable to walk or exercise due to orthopedic or respiratory issues
  • Heart activity is monitored using ECG and sometimes imaging (e.g., echo)
Stress Echocardiography (Stress Echo)

In this advanced method, we combine a treadmill or pharmacological stress test with echocardiography. First, a resting 2D echocardiogram is performed. Then, during or after stress (exercise or medication), the echocardiogram is repeated to assess how the heart muscle responds to increased workload. This allows for more detailed evaluation of cardiac function, blood flow, and wall motion abnormalities that may not be visible at rest.

All the options are supervised by trained cardiac staff to ensure safety.
