This screening is typically performed between 11 and 13+6 weeks of pregnancy and includes:
- Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan: Measures the fluid-filled space behind the baby’s neck via ultrasound.
- Blood Test: Measures levels of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) and free beta-hCG.
The results, combined with the mother’s age and the baby’s gestational age, estimate the risk of chromosomal conditions like:
- Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
- Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)
- Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13)
