What Is Obstetric Doppler?
An obstetric Doppler is a targeted ultrasound that measures blood flow in:
- Umbilical artery (flow from placenta to baby)
- Middle cerebral artery (blood flow to baby’s brain)
- Ductus venosus (blood flow through the fetal liver and heart)
- Uterine arteries (maternal blood flow to the placenta)
These studies help assess the baby’s oxygen and nutrient supply, especially if there are signs of fetal growth restriction or placental problems.
When Is a Doppler Scan Recommended?
Your doctor may recommend Doppler studies if you:
- Are diagnosed with Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR)
- Have high blood pressure or preeclampsia
- Have a history of stillbirth or placental insufficiency
- Are carrying multiples (twins, triplets)
