Rh Incompatibility Management
Rh Incompatibility Management
Monitoring and Preventive Care for Rh-Negative Mothers
At KidsHeart Medical Center, we provide focused care for Rh-negative mothers — helping prevent complications that can arise when blood types between mother and baby don’t match.
Rh incompatibility is a manageable condition with timely intervention.
At our Dubai and Abu Dhabi centers, we monitor pregnancies closely, provide preventive injections when needed, and ensure that both mother and baby remain safe throughout. Explore our gynecology services here.
With the right care, Rh incompatibility is nothing to fear — and everything to manage confidently.
What Is Rh Incompatibility?
This condition occurs when a mother’s blood type is Rh-negative and her baby’s blood is Rh-positive.
If fetal blood cells enter the mother’s bloodstream, her immune system may produce antibodies against them. In future pregnancies, this immune response can lead to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), which affects the baby’s red blood cells.
Thankfully, with simple preventive care, this can be avoided.
When to Be Screened or Treated
You should be evaluated for Rh incompatibility if:
- Your blood type is Rh-negative
- You’ve had a previous miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or procedure like amniocentesis
- You’re carrying a baby whose father is Rh-positive
- You had a previous baby affected by Rh sensitization
Screening is done early in pregnancy — and again after delivery.
What to Expect at KidsHeart
- Blood Type and Antibody Screening: We confirm your Rh status and check for any existing antibodies.
- Preventive Anti-D Injection: Given around 28 weeks and within 72 hours of delivery (or after any potential fetal blood exposure).
- Close Monitoring: If antibodies are already present, we monitor the baby for signs of anemia or distress through ultrasounds and Doppler studies.
- Postnatal Planning: We review your baby’s blood type after birth and guide next steps based on outcomes.
- Counseling for Future Pregnancies: We help you plan for future pregnancies with full awareness and preparation.
At KidsHeart, we explain every step — and support you fully, whether this is your first pregnancy or not.
