Testing With a Reason, Not a Routine

These investigations aren’t offered to every child who comes through the door. We reach for genetic testing, an MRI, or an EEG only when something in the history or exam points toward a medical cause worth confirming.

Regression Changes the Conversation

A child losing skills they’d already mastered is treated differently from a child who was simply slow to gain them in the first place. Regression is one of the clearer signals that a closer medical look is warranted.

Three Tests, Three Different Jobs

Genetic testing looks for an inherited or spontaneous cause behind a developmental picture, an MRI shows the physical structure of the brain, and an EEG reads its electrical activity during seizures or unusual episodes. We order only the ones that actually apply.

A Normal Result Still Moves Things Forward

Ruling a cause out narrows the field just as much as finding one does, and either way you leave with a clearer next step instead of an open question. We treat both outcomes as useful.

When Are These Investigations Recommended?

These are not routine tests — but we may recommend them if a child has:

Unexplained developmental delays across multiple domains
Seizures or episodes of unusual movements
Regression — losing previously gained skills
Signs of cerebral palsy, muscle weakness, or unusual tone
Dysmorphic features or physical markers suggesting a genetic condition
A strong family history of neurodevelopmental disorders

The goal is not to test more — but to test wisely, when it may inform care.

What Each Investigation Tells Us

Genetic Testing
Helps identify inherited or spontaneous mutations that may explain developmental differences. This includes chromosomal microarray, whole exome sequencing, or targeted panels.
Brain MRI
Provides detailed imaging of brain structure to detect injury, malformations, or delayed development.
EEG (Electroencephalogram)
Measures brain electrical activity, used in evaluating seizures, regression, or periods of unusual behavior.
