Understanding Recurring Headaches — And Helping Children Find Relief

At KidsHeart Medical Center, we know how distressing it is to see your child in pain — especially when headaches keep returning without clear answers.
Chronic headaches and migraines are surprisingly common in children. Some are stress-related, others linked to neurological patterns.
Our role is to rule out serious causes, provide an accurate diagnosis, and create a management plan that works — for your child and your family.
Our Pediatric Neurology team offers experienced, evidence-based care in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Al Ain.

What Are Childhood Headaches and Migraines?
Not all headaches are the same. Children may experience:
- Tension Headaches: Dull, steady pain often related to stress or fatigue
- Migraines: Intense, pulsing pain that may include nausea, light sensitivity, or visual changes
- Cluster Headaches: Rare but severe headaches around one eye
- Secondary Headaches: Caused by infections, vision problems, nose problems, hypertension or rarely, brain issues
Headaches may be triggered by sleep problems, dehydration, anxiety, vision issues, or hormonal changes — and some run in families.
When Should You See a Pediatric Neurologist?
Schedule an evaluation if your child:
- Has frequent or severe headaches
- Misses school or activities because of head pain
- Experiences nausea, vomiting, or light sensitivity
- Has early morning headaches or pain that wakes them from sleep
- Has a family history of migraines or neurological issues
- Is not improving with usual over-the-counter medications
Even if the cause is benign, proper evaluation brings relief — and peace of mind.
How We Diagnose and Manage Headaches
Here’s how we assess and treat childhood headache concerns:
- Detailed Headache History: We explore triggers, duration, severity, and patterns over time.
- Neurological Examination: This helps identify any concerning signs that may require further investigation.
- Headache Diary (if needed): We may ask families to track symptoms, diet, sleep, and school attendance.
- Imaging (if indicated): MRI or CT is done only when red flags are present — not routinely.
- Personalized Treatment Plan: This may include lifestyle adjustments, preventive medications, and school strategies.
We focus on reducing headache frequency, improving function, and giving families real tools — not just reassurance.
