Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA)
Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA)
Capturing Seizures Clearly — So You Can Plan With Confidence

At KidsHeart Medical Center, we meet many families wondering if their child’s inattention, impulsivity, or restlessness might be more than “just a phase.”
The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) is a computerized tool that objectively measures attention, focus, and impulse control.
It’s especially helpful in evaluating for ADHD — and in separating true attention deficits from other behavioral or emotional concerns.
Our Pediatric Neurology team uses TOVA as part of a full attention evaluation across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Al Ain.

What Is the TOVA Test?
TOVA is a standardized, non-verbal test that measures:
- Attention span and consistency
- Reaction time and processing speed
- Impulsivity and self-control
Children respond to simple visual or auditory cues over a 20–25 minute session. Their performance is compared to age-matched norms to assess attention-related functioning.
The test is not affected by language, learning level, or cultural background — making it useful across diverse populations.
When Should Your Child Take the TOVA?
We recommend TOVA if your child:
- Is being evaluated for ADHD or focus difficulties
- Struggles with impulsive behavior or distractibility
- Has inconsistent school performance despite normal IQ
- Finds it hard to sit still, complete tasks, or follow through
- Needs documentation for accommodations or treatment planning
- Has already been diagnosed and needs treatment monitoring
TOVA provides data — not just observations — to guide next steps.
What to Expect During the TOVA
Here’s how we make the process smooth and supportive:
- Pre-Test Review: We explain the setup and make sure your child is comfortable.
- Computerized Task Session: Your child follows simple instructions, pressing a button only for specific cues.
- Performance Monitoring: The test quietly tracks attention lapses, speed, and errors.
- Results Interpretation: Pediatric Neurologists analyze the patterns, not just the score.
- Integrated Evaluation: TOVA is combined with clinical interviews, school reports, and behavior history for a full picture.
The test feels like a quiet game — but gives us real, useful information.

Usually age 6 and up — though we tailor testing based on each child’s development.
We take that into account. TOVA helps clarify attention vs. emotional or cognitive issues.
