Capturing Seizures Clearly — So You Can Plan With Confidence

At KidsHeart Medical Center, we often meet families trying to make sense of unusual episodes — movements, stares, or spells that come and go without warning.
Video EEG (V-EEG) is a specialized test that records brain activity along with continuous video, allowing us to match what the brain is doing with what we see.
It’s one of the most important tools in diagnosing and managing epilepsy and seizure disorders.
Our Pediatric Neurology team provides safe, child-sensitive V-EEG testing across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Al Ain.

What Is a Video EEG?
A V-EEG is a diagnostic test that combines:
- EEG (Electroencephalogram): Tracks brain’s electrical activity using sensors on the scalp
- Video Monitoring: Records physical movements, behavior, and any visible events
This setup helps us:
- Confirm whether an event is a seizure or another type of episode
- Classify the type of seizure or epilepsy
- Guide treatment plans or medication decisions
- Track progress or changes over time
Unlike routine EEGs, V-EEG is done over several hours — or even overnight — to increase the chance of capturing an episode.
When Should Your Child Have a V-EEG?
We recommend this test if your child:
- Has unexplained staring, jerking, or loss of awareness
- Is being evaluated for possible epilepsy
- Needs a review of current seizure treatment
- Has already had a routine EEG but needs further clarification
- Has events that may not be seizures — like fainting, night movements, or behavior spells
Seeing the episode and brainwaves together gives us powerful insight.
What to Expect During a V-EEG
Here’s how we make the process smooth and supportive:
- Pre-Test Preparation: We explain the setup in advance and help your child feel at ease.
- Sensor Placement: Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on the scalp using soft paste — painless and safe.
- Continuous Monitoring: Your child is observed for several hours (or longer), with both EEG and video recording.
- Trigger Techniques (if safe): We may ask your child to hyperventilate or flash lights to help provoke typical episodes.
- Data Review: Our team reviews the entire recording to find patterns, classify events, and recommend next steps.
You’ll have answers — not just images or numbers.
